The Blue Mountains to Sydney's west offer spectacular gorge and mesa tableland scenery, along with a range of arty cafes and boutique shops. For a limited stay in Sydney, I can recommend a day trip taking the train from Sydney Central station to Katoomba (Blue Mountains line), which takes around 2 hours. From the Katoomba station, it is about a 20 minute walk to the gorge rim overlooking the three sisters. There you have a choice of an easy walk along the rim of the gorge, or a more adventurous one of descending into the gorge down the Giant's stairway. About 30 mins walk from the three sisters is a funicular train called the scenic railway, that can take you up and down the cliff, as well as a cable car crossing a deep valley.
