The Paramatta Ferry service is one of those great river journeys,
reminding me a little of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Starting
from Circular Quay, the ferry passes the stately homes lining the
foreshores of Sydney Harbour, past the site of the Sydney Olympic
Games at Homebush, then enters the Paramatta river whose banks are
lined with mangroves interspersed with derelict factories from
Sydney's rustbelt. After nearly an hour of varied river scenery, the
ferry docks at Parramatta (which means place of the eels in
the local dialect), the second oldest city in Australia. After
strolling around Paramatta, you my either take a return ferry, or a
faster rail service.
From UNSW, take any of a number of buses that run to Circular Quay. The ferrys for Paramatta depart hourly from No. 5 wharf. |
